The 5 Viewpoints Gen Z Has On The World
Gen Z have not been shy about their viewpoints on the world. Gen Z are the people born between the late 1990s and the early 2010s. Some are entering the work force, and some are not even in high school yet.
Many people believe this generation will change the way we live. So, we should all understand what they are fighting for
1. Racism and Police Brutality
George Floyd was murdered in police custody on May 25, 2020. A video taken of officer Derrick Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck surfaced on the internet immediately after. This video seemed to be the last straw for activists and Gen Z. After this Black Live Matter protests were popping up not only in the United States, but in other countries as well, protesting police brutality.
According to Morning Consultant, 82 percent of Gen Z agree that racism is a big issue in the United States, and 79 percent expressed that Black Americans are often discriminated against. 12 percent of Gen Z participated in Black Lives Matter protests, as well as a large amount of them donating money to causes and spoke out about racism and police brutality within their friends and family as well as social media.
2. Corporate Responsibility
Gen Z had decided rather than just accepting that “this is how the world works” they are doing something to change it. According to Digital Media Solutions 70 percent of Gen Z would rather buy products from companies that align with their ethical beliefs.
According to BBMG Gen Z wants brands to “stand up and speak out.” They want brands to do this, not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because they have the voice to demand change.
3. The Right to Vote
Although not all of Gen Zers are old enough to vote, there still are some that can. 159.8 million Americans voted in the 2020 election, which was record breaking.
The NBC polls found that 65 percent of Gen Z between the ages of 18 and 24 years old voted for Biden, which was 11 percent more than any other age group. In many states Gen Z was proven to be the “key to Biden’s success.”
4. Anti-Rich and Anti-Capitalism
Gen Z is not the only generation that has had an issue with capitalism. Millennials had inherited a messy economy and would complain about their unfair working conditions and their student loan debt. Gen Z, however, instead of complaining has decided it is time for a change, cheering on “democratic socialist” Bernie Sanders in the 2016 and 2020 elections as well as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Gen Z fears the “working life” that generations before them lived. Gen Z wants to dismantle the idea of working paycheck to paycheck and the “toxic social norms that sacrificed the mental and physical health” of generations before them.
5. Body Positivity Movement
The body positivity movement isn’t a new thing in the social media world. It has been happening for the pet couple of years, however, with the emergence of TikTok the body positivity movement has found a new platform. Body positivity in 2020 is not just about your weight, it’s about acne, scars, hair, clothes and many more.
Videos of women and men expressing themselves through clothes, loving themselves for who they are and not based on past beauty norms and remind others that it doesn’t matter what they wear or what they look like that they are valid and loved.
Gen Z is the generation that is holding people accountable and dismantling societal norms that were forced on previous generations. 2020 was the years where many members of Gen Z spoke out about their issues with the economy, politics, climate change, corporate responsibilities and many other topics. It’s exciting to see such a young generation demand change to better the world their beginning to enter.
